A quick followup to my concept of vegans giving up alcohol (or coffee, depending on your situation) being similar to an omnivore giving up meat, at least in terms of the social and habitual issues that arise from the change (first discussed here, results of the experiment here): I might be onto something here.
A recent survey of Australians suggests that people really like their beer. When asked what they’d rather give up in lieu of not drinking for a month, 12% said they’d ditch their friends. 30% said they’d give up their mobile phones. Oh, and 20% said they’d give up sex for a month before they gave up drinking. And only 75% thought it was even possible to go a month (a 28 day month at that) sober.
Interestingly, the idea of giving up meat never even came up in the survey. I think there’s room for something novel in outreach campaigns here.
