Boing Boing: an artist is going to trial in Denmark to face cruelty to animals after a recent exhibit featured
goldfish in a blender. The blender was plugged in, but it was up to the visitor to press the button to turn it on. Two goldfish died in two separate incidents, despite an injunction to cut the power to the applicance. The director of the museum claims that "
an artist has the right to create works which defy our concept of what is right and what is wrong", which sounds like a really cool mantra for an art student, you know, if he or she is in grade
three and doesn't have access to anything crazier than macaroni. Once you grow up, there's always the risk of retaliation by some other artist, possibly even a
sandwich artist. Semi-related: does anyone remember if the
Super Bass-o-matic SNL sketch used a real fish?
Update 05/19:
Rosemary reports that the courts have ruled that there was
no cruelty involved, because the fish died "instantly".
