December 2007

Pierre from HSUS sent word of a new report from his group about the whole fake fake fur thing.

Wow, “fake fake fur” made me think about that old Will Smith “Wild Wild West” song, so I just went and listened to it, substituting “Fake Fake Fur” into the lyrics as needed. It makes pretty much the same amount of sense. Anyway.

So the fake fake fur: as it turns out, in the USA, the clothing people only have to label the fur in their garments if the fur’s value is more than $150. A bunny rabbit might be priceless to you or me, but to the fashion world, it’s apparently worth considerably less, since not only are companies putting real fur trim on their products, they’re actually labeling it as fake.

The list of retailers goes way beyond Crazy Otto’s Discount Fake Fur Emporium too – Bloomingdale’s, Neimann Marcus, Sak’s Fifth Avenue and others are names in the HSUS report, which, incidentally, can be found here, with an in-depth PDF report here.

I understand fake hot dogs, and I can even get into the whole fake leather thing to a degree, but I don’t get fake fur. Even when it’s really fake, it’s too real to me.

This may or may not affect your travel plans

December 20, 2007

In Dibble, Oklahoma, it’s illegal for two animals to have sex in public within the city limits. Generally speaking, the ticket goes to the human responsible for the animals, or at least that was the case for Carol Medenhall, who got in trouble for her goats’ attempt to get into trouble, as it were.

Hats off to Japan for making a bad PR situation even dumber

December 19, 2007

I can’t figure out if this is an honest case of naïve intentions gone awry or if Japan just really wants to stick it to anyone who disagrees with their whaling practices: the Hakkeijima Sea Paradise aquarium has dressed their captive whales up in Santa hats…

Another cage-free egg announcement

December 19, 2007

The world’s largest food service provider has announced that they’re moving towards cage-free eggs, and since they used 48 million eggs last year, that’s a fairly bog change. Two initial things of note: 1) I’ve linked to a press release, so it’s a bit biased, and 2) the policy is for shell egg products [...]

Governor Huckabee’s son may have hanged a dog

December 18, 2007

I haven’t been following the American presidential campaign too much yet (er, go Kucinich?), but I’m up to the point where I recognize the names of most of the contenders.
Mike Huckabee is an easy one to remember, because he’s the one who thought Canadians had a igloo. Oh, and because his son allegedly hanged [...]

Australia might send armed vessel to monitor whale hunt

December 18, 2007

About a month ago, we reported that Japan’s “scientific” whaling program was bigger than ever, and would include humpback whales, despite an ongoing moratorium on commercial whaling. Every season, there’s usually a Greenpeace vessel out there getting in the fleet’s way, but this time there might be a second anti-whaling boat out there taking [...]

Milk and egg allergies are getting harder to beat

December 17, 2007

Wanna know the most common food allergy among children? Nope, not peanuts. It’s milk. Wanna know the number two allergy (heh, “number two allergy”)? Nope, still not peanuts. It’s eggs. Wanna know two things vegans don’t eat? OK, you got this one: dairy and eggs.
Moreover, researchers are finding [...]

Want to win an iPod?

December 14, 2007

A quick update on our email newsletter: we’ve recently added a Friday mailing to round up a collection of the week’s updates on The Better. This supplements the Monday email, which covers whatever’s going on in my head on a given week.
Also, we’re giving away an iPod at the end of this month! [...]

If nobody’s threatening to sue you, you aren’t trying hard enough

December 14, 2007

The California Milk Processor Board is threatening to sue PETA over their “Got Pus?” anti-dairy campaign. When I first read the story here, it sounded like the milk board was upset over the allegations that milk available in supermarkets contained unsafe levels of blood and pus. An expanded version of the story suggests [...]
