Gregory sent word of a massive crustacean jailbreak from an Asian supermarket in Germany. I don’t have actual numbers, but there were enough for people to notice a stream of them heading down the street at 1:45 in the morning. The lobsters managed to leave their crates, which were poorly wired, and then got out through the metal shutters covering the entrance.
As is common in these scenarios, the act of an escape causes creatures to be reclassified from “food” to “noble creatures deserving sanctuary” and the lobsters are being sent to an animal home (the supermarket hasn’t asked for them back). We see this all the time – live animal escapes, public gets inspired, animal gets saved. What’s the difference between a saved animal and the one that ends up on someone’s dinner plate, other than the fact that he or she has captured the imagination of the public? How can we capitalize on this in outreach campaigns?
