Lobsters on the lam

by Jason on October 31, 2007

Gregory sent word of a massive crustacean jailbreak from an Asian supermarket in Germany. I don’t have actual numbers, but there were enough for people to notice a stream of them heading down the street at 1:45 in the morning. The lobsters managed to leave their crates, which were poorly wired, and then got out through the metal shutters covering the entrance.

As is common in these scenarios, the act of an escape causes creatures to be reclassified from “food” to “noble creatures deserving sanctuary” and the lobsters are being sent to an animal home (the supermarket hasn’t asked for them back). We see this all the time – live animal escapes, public gets inspired, animal gets saved. What’s the difference between a saved animal and the one that ends up on someone’s dinner plate, other than the fact that he or she has captured the imagination of the public? How can we capitalize on this in outreach campaigns?

Your dog shoots man story for October 2007

by Jason on October 31, 2007

You know that old journalism saying “dog bites man isn’t a story, but man bites dog is”? These days, it’s been flipped to “man shoots dog isn’t a story, but dog shoots man is.”

The case of the day comes via PonderingWillow, who sends in the tale of an Iowa man who was shot in the leg by his dog (the story’s on the BBC – American hunters, the Brits are laughing at you). This particular case happened during a hunting trip: James Harris put his gun down (safety off) so he could pick up a dead bird and the dog stepped on the trigger.

Harris isn’t in danger of dying from the wound, but apparently it’ll “give him trouble for a long time.”

According to a DNR official, this kind of thing happens several times each year, which makes me wonder a little about all these claims of responsible hunting practices from pro-hunting advocates…

Another point in the organics column

October 30, 2007

If you’re still keeping score in what seems like a never ending debate, a new study has been released which claims that organic food is more nutritious than conventional food. In the UK, anyway. They’re still a little puzzled over why the amount of betterness varies so much, but the numbers look good.
Until [...]

Another beef warning, months after sale

October 30, 2007

Following the recent massive recall of beef due to E. coli contamination, the media appear to be all over every report they can find, which would make an easy job for me, except for the little things I notice along the way.
Take this story, for example, which says that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has [...]

Boiled nuts are healthier than roasted nuts

October 30, 2007

The only thing I like more about this headline is that it’s from Fox News, which means that a week or so after publishing “Boiled Nuts Help Fight Diseases, Study Says,” they’ll start an investigative report: “why are Democrats boiling their genitals?”
Anyway, once you stop giggling like mad (it took me an hour or so), [...]

The crime of the day

October 29, 2007

Just to keep the day from being an all-out fear fest, here’s a funny crime you don’t have to worry much about getting busted for as a vegan: felony cheese making.
Just imagine: you’re in the big house, surrounded by murderers, arsonists, and thieves.
“What are you in for, tough guy?”
There’s just no voice that you could [...]

Some foods are more scary than change

October 29, 2007

Since we just covered deadly fast foods, we might as well continue to play Big Media and scare the crap out of you further: leading medical authority Cracked Magazine has come up with the list of the 6 most terrifying foods. Unlike the last story with the “knowing is half the battle” GI Joe [...]

The 88 deadliest fast foods

October 29, 2007

Someone’s taken the time to examine the menus of several fast food restaurants and now there’s a list of the 88 Fast Food Items Most Likely To Kill You. To provide some measure of objectivity, the ranking is based on grams of trans fats, as the recommended daily dose of these dudes is supposed [...]

Superbugs are the new Martians

October 26, 2007

The news is abuzz lately with stories of the “superbug,” partly because we need to be scared at all times of all things, except for buying newspapers and watching the news, but also because it’s pretty scary – for instance, a Brooklyn middle school student died on the 14th from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. [...]

The dangers of promoting the environmental damage from beef

October 25, 2007

The environment is big on everyone’s mind right now, and a lot of people are thinking that the veg connection to the climate is one that should be exploited at this point.
Well, except for Greenpeace, anyway.
In Paths to a Low-Carbon Future, a report commissioned by Greenpeace, one of the recommendations is for Australians to shift [...]
