On the topic of celebrity

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about celebrities and vegetarianism. A lot. Still no conclusions. It’s irritating me. Here are two example stories I’ve been staring at:

First, PonderingWillow sent a story last week about Alicia Silverstone posing naked for PETA. (you can see the ad here. PW comments: “If we were to analyze this video’s affect on the Houston population, maybe we should do the following thought experiment. If Alicia was a bowler, and talking about how bowling changed her life, would you start bowling every day? Hmmm… Or would you just jack off and never think about it again?”

I don’t know if I entirely disagree, but I’ve been looking at the gossip magazines at the grocery store a lot lately and trying to figure out how they interact with the average shopper’s brain. Again, no conclusions.

Next up, I found a story about Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia, who packed on 20 pounds of muscle this year while following what appears to be a lacto-vegetarian diet, making the cover of Men’s Fitness in the process. I suspect that the majority of readers of Men’s Fitness aren’t going to gain 20 pounds this year (it’s simple math, just like how the majority of people who buy a book on getting rich in real estate don’t end up millionaires – it’s hard work, after all). Still, it’s an interesting story in a well targeted market, and I’m guessing that the goal was to promote his TV show, not his diet, but hey, look at that.

Do both stories have a role to play? Sure. If you’ve got limited resources, which kind of story is going to have the biggest impact on your goals and targets? That’s the stuff that’s been breaking my head lately. More later…
