October 2006

Just yesterday I asked Ange what’s been going on with the Fast Food Nation movie, because I thought it was supposed to be out in September, and she keeps closer track of the outside world than I do. She didn’t know, but someone must have overheard our conversation (I knew the kitchen was bugged!), because I just got word that the release date is now November 17th. Anyone want to plan some VP meetups around the event? If you want to be the coordinator for your city, claim your glory in the comments below. Link.

Vegan author takes activism to the page

by Jason on October 31, 2006

Horror writer David Agranoff has a new book of short stories out that deal with themes of environmental destruction. As David says, “in the last couple years I started to take seriously the talent I had for crafting stories. Most important I realized that it was a way to take the message to people who might not look at a Why Vegan or watch Meat Your Meat.” Plus hooking omnis with promises of porn has already been done. The book’s vrey affordable, and proceeds will benefit California animal sanctuary Animal Acres. You can read more about Screams From a Dying World here: Link.

Some australian magazines not ready for the truth yet

October 30, 2006

Since Animals Australia wasn’t able to get several Australian magazines to run their clever ad against the pork industry, I’m repeating the main copy here, which ran in the form of a recipe: “After birth, ensure piglet’s only contact with mother is through metal bars. Within the first week of its life, surgically mutilate piglet. [...]

NYC gunning for a trans fat ban

October 30, 2006

New York City’s health department is working on a ban of trans fats from restaurant dishes, and it looks like McDonald’s french fries actually count as a “restuarant dish” in this instance. City health officials have allegedly stated that the artery destroying trans fats are so unhealthy that they “belong in the same category [...]

Ask Y’all: homemade toothpaste?

October 25, 2006

As I’m not a dentist, nor am I even making dentist money, here’s one for y’all who might be: Danielle writes, “I suffer from severe food and skin allergies, and can’t for the life of me find a toothpaste that doesn’t contain absurd, unpronounceable ingredients or scents, as these all irritate my hyper sensitive skin. [...]

Newsflash: hunting to stop epidemics makes outbreak worse

October 25, 2006

Here’s a story that I’ll be referring to the next time a government announces a massive cull to ward off a disease: researchers at the University of Georgia have published a paper claiming that killing animals in the wild to thwart an epidemic can actually increase the severity of the disease. Yes, this does [...]

Ask Y’all: good vegan lunches?

October 24, 2006

We haven’t had one of these in a while: vegyay asks, “I haven’t been vegan for very long, but i’ve been finding it very difficult to find vegan food at school. I was wondering if anyone wanted to share some favorite vegan snacks on the go, homemade or otherwise.” This is timely, as I [...]

Vegetables may keep your brain sharp as you age

October 24, 2006

Dave Noisy reports that vegetable consumption may reduce mental decline as you age, effectively keeping your brain younger. As the archives of this site’s headlines might suggest, people get less sharp as they age, but this might be offset to some degree by eating lots of vegetables, and it’s a bit sad that more [...]

The ad writer is either an undercover veg agent or society’s gone to hell

October 23, 2006

I don’t have cable, and while I don’t miss commercials at all, I think they might provide some insights into the psyche of a nation. There are days, of course, where I’m glad I don’t get the opportunity to do this analysis, because if I had to regularly watch these Canadian sub chain’s latest [...]

Spanaway, Washington man first to be charged under state’s new bestiality law

October 23, 2006

A few years back in Canada, we had a TV show called Talking to Americans where a comedian would get Americans to congratulate Canada, either for doing things that were ridiculous (like preserving our national igloo) or for coming out of the stone age by “just recently” enacting changes that the rest of the world [...]
